Arne "Reform" Duncan
Arne Duncan was in town yesterday as the guest of honor for the Advance Illinois morning reception. Duncan was on hand to discuss his initiatives while CEO of the Chicago Public Schools as he plans to unleash them on the nation, using stimulus money to strongarm states into buying into the “miracle.”
Duncan does have leverage; he alone has control over the $5 billion incentive fund. And in some cases, he may be able to withhold some stimulus dollars that have been allocated for a particular state.
The event was hosted by Advance Illinois, a state education policy group that is co-chaired by former Governor of Illinois Jim Edgar and Midwest Chairman of JP Morgan Chase, William Daley (of the Chicago Daleys). The event was a coming-out for the group, that has policy proposals for their vision of “education reform.” State and city educators, education advocates, educrats, profiteers and even union leaders were invited to the event.
[CTU president Marilyn] Stewart and her colleagues from the Chicago Teachers Union’s staff were eating breakfast and cheering Arne Duncan, dozens of Stewart’s members were picketing and protesting against Duncan’s corporate “school reform” and union-busting policies on the sidewalk outside the fancy hotel where Stewart was cheering Duncan.
Outside, members of CORE protested Duncan’s appearance. They say they are against his Chicago School Turnaround and charter school policies. They don’t want to see them spread across the nation.
From the Chi-Town Daily News Report on the demonstration:
“He’s saying it’s the Chicago miracle,” said Jackson Potter, co-chair of the Caucus of Rank and File Teachers. “We’re saying it’s the Chicago disaster.”

OMG…
So I wanted to re-locate because they won’t hire me here because I’m black
and over 40…but with this news of him having all this money to spend to put
his cronies in to privatize nationwide, there is no hope…
what an awful day for education
when this Mayor Daley henchman Obana’s basketball buddy
was unleashed nationally…I can only hope
that someone is keeping an eye on his punchlist who is “profiting”
off his “miracle” philosophy of education.
Because someone will be?
Follow that money trail
I am an African American Female over 40 with 23 years of service. I have 2 Masters and 5 middle school endorsements. I am the kind of teacher that they do no want and will not hire at CPS. Since I have tenured, they will stop at nothing to rid themselves of tenured teachers who make enough money to feed themselves and have a roof over their heads. I have also noticed a new training technique that principals are using since Huber-Boy came in. Principals are being told to “Get teachers by any means necessary”. This involves getting students who are severe and chronic behavior problems to attack, assault and verbally harass tenured teachers. When the teacher tries to defend themselves they get together with this student and concoct lies that are sent to the Law Department. I have a list of at least 15 teachers who have experienced this kind of attack. As far as Arne Duncan is concerned, he’s quite an expert on how to rid the system of teachers who are over 40. I am sure that he will do the same as he moves from state to state attacking and firing tenured teachers. It is a sad day in education. To the young people that are being hired, remember, we were young too once. When we were hired they loved us too. Look and observe what is happening to older teachers. That’s what will happen to you in the future!
