CORE has received tremendous support in the past year. Thousands have attended our events and joined us in our fight to save public education in Chicago and beyond.

We have mobilized CTU membership around issues from responsible staffing,  to school closings, to the theft of our pay. We have filled the gaps that have been left by the current leadership of the CTU. We have done these things as an all volunteer army with limited time and resources. One could extrapolate the amount of positive change we could make if we had all the resources necessary to transform the CTU into a Union that fights for its members and wins!

We’ve accomplished a lot with our limited budget. Last summer, CORE sent a delegation of members to a conference in Los Angeles  that included Teachers Union activists from LA, New York, Washington DC, and San Francisco. This trip allowed CORE to exchange ideas with other cities facing the privatization juggernaut.

CORE held its first Convention this past summer where members made concrete plans to fix the Chicago Teachers Union. We used this time to initiate the formulation of our officer slate, wrote our platform, and finalized our by-laws. The process was, like all democratic actions, arduous and messy, but worth every moment devoted to it.

CORE is campaigning for our three pension candidates, Lois Ashford, Jay Rehak, and Howard Heath. CORE has vetted them as the three most qualified people for the job and are working tirelessly to get them elected.

These events and campaigns are extremely important to us, but our passion alone cannot fuel these actions. As member-driven organization with low membership rates ($35 a year for teachers, $20 for PSRPs/Retirees/Supporters), we need additional resources to keep in the fight.

For the next 100 Days, CORE is asking 100 people who believe in the power of public education to donate $100 (or more) to our cause.
