Bilingual / Bicultural Educational programs, (Dual Language being one of the better forms of BL / BC Ed.)
and ESL, that has always been the main component of Bilingual Education programs, is here to stay in Chicago, and in Illinois. And it won't fall by the way side, like the obliterated schools that have been closed, and that have been subsequently privatized, while the sheepish CTU has looked stood by. ESL programs alone, when there are multiple languages in the school setting, and not twenty speakers of the same language, are worth fighting for also, just as they have always been.
We will fight for it in Springfield, fight for it in Washington, and take the fight wherever it has to be taken. We have Lau vs. Nichols under our arms, and tons of research to prove that we know what works for our ELL students. There has been nothing more important that has happened to me in my life, than having become bilingual, and my own three students all having benefited from becoming bilingual in the Chicago Public Schools, graduates of Morgan Park HS, Kelly HS, and Kennedy HS.

Now that John Kugler has published the June list of tenured teachers who were terminated, someone might want to sit down and figure out how many of those teachers were veterans (and over, say, 40 years old) to complement the EEOC complaint on race discrimination with one on age discrimination.

I am an African American Female over 40 with 23 years of service. I have 2 Masters and 5 middle school endorsements. I am the kind of teacher that they do no want and will not hire at CPS. Since I have tenured, they will stop at nothing to rid themselves of tenured teachers who make enough money to feed themselves and have a roof over their heads. I have also noticed a new training technique that principals are using since Huber-Boy came in. Principals are being told to "Get teachers by any means necessary". This involves getting students who are severe and chronic behavior problems to attack, assault and verbally harass tenured teachers. When the teacher tries to defend themselves they get together with this student and concoct lies that are sent to the Law Department. I have a list of at least 15 teachers who have experienced this kind of attack. As far as Arne Duncan is concerned, he's quite an expert on how to rid the system of teachers who are over 40. I am sure that he will do the same as he moves from state to state attacking and firing tenured teachers. It is a sad day in education. To the young people that are being hired, remember, we were young too once. When we were hired they loved us too. Look and observe what is happening to older teachers. That's what will happen to you in the future!
